In its resolve to recover from the COVID-19 aggravated labour shortage, the Australian government has relaunched PMSOL. A list of skilled occupations needing urgent fulfillment. Changes have also been made in the visa procedures to the specific skilled workers exempt from the current ANZ travel restrictions.

The Australian Government has released a Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL). A list containing naming all skilled occupations that need urgent filling in the face of labour shortage and crisis that has erupted in Australia. Alex Hawke, the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs recently announced the addition of 3 occupations to the PMSOL - Hospital Pharmacist, Industrial Pharmacist and Retail Pharmacist which now takes the total to 44 skills.

Candidates applying for the visa who are currently holding an occupation listed in the PMSOL will be given priority in the visa subclasses. The visa subclasses are as follows:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage(TSS) visa
  • Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional(Provisional Visa)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa and
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme(RSMS) visa.

This arrangement implies that qualified visa candidates will be allowed to travel to Australia. This application can be submitted by the applicant or their employer. The compulsory 14 day quarantine period will apply and it will be at the expense of the traveller or sponsor.

The PMSOL was first introduced in September 2020 to analyse the ramifications of COVID-19 on the Australian market accompanied by analysing trends of fluctuating skill demands.

The other skilled job titles in the PMSOL are Chief Executive or Managing Director, Construction Project Manager, Accountant (General), Management Accountant Taxation Accountant, External Auditor, Internal Auditor,  Surveyor, Cartographer, Spatial Scientist, Civil Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Structural Engineer, Transport Engineer Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Mining Engineer, Petroleum Engineer, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Veterinarian, Orthotist or Prosthetist, General Practitioner, Resident Medical Officer, Psychiatrist, Medical Practitioners, Midwife, Registered Nurse, Multimedia Specialist, Analyst Programmer, Developer Programmer, Software Engineer Software and Applications Programmers, ICT Security Specialist,  Social Worker Maintenance Planner and Chef.
