Organisations struggle with retaining and engaging with employees in the remote work era. What must be done to resolve this?

The rise of the COVID-19 pandemic pushed organisations to rethink how they would handle their workforce. Some businesses closed, while others found a way to move forward in the middle of the uncertainty. Some organisations opted to work from home, which completely changed how businesses operate. The rest is history.

Unfortunately, companies still need help with employee engagement and retention despite the resolution that employees would work remotely.

A LinkedIn survey revealed that 59 per cent of Australians plan to change employers in 2023, while 56 per cent are confident that they can find a new job. What motivates them is a desire for a better work-life balance, higher pay, and feeling undervalued and overworked.

Meanwhile, according to specialised recruiter Robert Half, 70 per cent of Australian businesses are more concerned about their staff leaving their company in 2023 than in 2022. Still, they cannot address their employees’ concerns to entice them to stay.

Companies wishing to retain talent must focus on improving employee retention strategies and revolutionising their workplace. Working semi-remotely, expanding professional development, and ensuring that the work environment is fun and inclusive are the top three measures employers focus on to retain staff.

How to enhance employee engagement and retention in the remote work era

Improving employee engagement and retention in the remote work era requires a thoughtful approach considering remote work’s unique challenges and opportunities. Here are some tips to help you in this endeavour:

  • Communication and transparency: Foster open and transparent communication channels to ensure employees feel connected and informed. Regularly communicate company updates, share relevant information, and encourage two-way communication through tools like video conferences, chat platforms, and email.
  • Set clear expectations: Clearly define remote employees’ roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations. Establish measurable goals and provide regular feedback and recognition to keep employees engaged and motivated.
  • Support work-life balance: Remote work can blur the boundaries between work and personal life. Encourage employees to establish healthy work-life boundaries by promoting self-care, flexible schedules, and encouraging daily breaks. Respect personal time off and promote a healthy work-life balance.
  • Virtual social interaction: Create opportunities for virtual social interaction to help remote employees build relationships and foster a sense of belonging. Encourage virtual team-building activities, online social events, or virtual water cooler chats to help employees connect personally.
  • Professional development: Offer remote employees opportunities for professional development and growth. Provide access to online training, webinars, virtual conferences, or mentorship programs to help them acquire new skills and advance in their careers.
  • Recognition and rewards: Recognise and appreciate the contributions of remote employees. Implement a system to acknowledge achievements through public recognition, virtual rewards, or simple thank-you notes. This helps foster a positive work environment and reinforces engagement.
  • Provide the right tools and support: Ensure remote employees have the necessary technology, equipment, and resources to perform their roles effectively. Offer I.T. support and training to help them navigate remote work tools and platforms.
  • Promote autonomy and trust: Trust your remote employees to manage their work effectively. Provide freedom and flexibility, giving them a sense of ownership and control over their work. Avoid micromanagement and focus on results and outcomes.
  • Regular check-ins: Schedule regular one-on-one check-ins to maintain frequent communication and provide support. Use these opportunities to address concerns, provide guidance, and offer feedback on performance.
  • Employee well-being: Prioritise employee well-being by offering resources and initiatives that support physical and mental health. Provide access to wellness programs, employee assistance programs, and resources for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Remember, each organisation and team are unique, so adapt these tips to suit your circumstances. Regularly seek employee feedback to understand their needs and challenges and adjust your strategies accordingly to enhance engagement and retention in the remote work era.
