With companies venturing into remote work, there is a huge need to nurture trust in the workplace. In this article, we discuss how employers can build trust in the remote work era.

The evolution of remote work from theory to reality is undeniable, with surveys revealing employees’ strong preference for remote roles. But to excel in this new paradigm, fostering trust within remote teams must emerge as a linchpin for sustained success.

Why trust is a crucial aspect of the workplace

Trust is the cornerstone of remote work success, fostering collaboration, accountability, and employee well-being. Without a physical presence, trust fuels effective communication, empowers autonomy, and mitigates feelings of isolation.

Clear evidence from surveys, like GitLab’s 2021 study (52% prefer remote roles) and Jobvite’s findings (35% reject on-site jobs), highlights the need to foster trust within remote teams as organisations embrace remote work.

This trust-building journey acknowledges the pandemic’s unique transition, necessitating new norms anchored in trust, accountability, and three key pillars: robust communication, intentional work/life balance, and employee autonomy.

Transparent communication is central to remote trust-building, reducing uncertainty, countering isolation, and utilising video conferences, messaging platforms, and project tools. Prioritising work/life balance with flexible hours and mental health initiatives prevents burnout, amplifying loyalty and trust.

Empowering employees with autonomy and acknowledging expertise while focusing on outcomes and innovation elevates trust. Departing from micro-management is pivotal, as research underscores trust's transformative impact on energy, productivity, job satisfaction, and well-being.

This foundation comprises three pillars: transparent communication via video conferencing and messaging, fostering work/life balance to avert burnout, and empowering autonomy to fuel innovation and mutual respect.

Trust's transformative impact on energy, productivity, and job satisfaction underscores its significance, making it imperative for remote teams' sustained success. A culture of trust enhances engagement, driving productivity and innovation, while also nurturing a sense of belonging within remote teams.

How to build trust in remote work

  • Establish effective communication norms. In remote settings, clear communication is crucial. Adapt communication methods to the virtual environment, utilising tools like video conferences and messaging platforms. Encourage transparent dialogue, address concerns promptly, and set expectations to ensure everyone feels connected.
  • Define clear and realistic goals. Empower remote teams with specific, achievable goals. Involve employees in the goal-setting process for increased engagement. Regularly review progress, maintain accountability, and align individual aspirations with organisational objectives.
  • Regular check-ins. Replace in-person interactions with regular virtual check-ins. Conduct both synchronous meetings and asynchronous updates to track progress, address challenges, and ensure alignment. Foster a supportive culture and keep teams connected.
  • Lead with transparency. Transparent leadership bolsters trust. Communicate openly about business matters, challenges, and successes. Conduct regular company-wide updates, share financial insights, and demonstrate empathy during difficult conversations.
  • Prioritise employee engagement. Focus on engagement over productivity. Engaged employees are more likely to excel. Monitor engagement through regular surveys, identifying factors affecting motivation and satisfaction. Take proactive steps to enhance the remote work experience and boost performance.

Incorporating these five steps will lay a solid foundation for building trust and cultivating a thriving remote work environment.
