Anyone can experience the crushing weight of impostor syndrome. Read on to find out how to confront it and ease it out of your life.

In the ever-changing landscape of the Australian workforce, imposter syndrome poses a significant challenge for professionals across various industries. While the “Great Resignation” era seems to be tapering off, imposter syndrome is now a pressing concern for HR management. Atlassian’s research in July 2022 paints a more positive outlook post-pandemic, yet a concerning 42% of employees still grapple with imposter syndrome, marking a notable increase from office-based settings.

Atlassian’s State of Teams 2022 Report sheds light on the impact of imposter syndrome and its correlation with HR management.

Surveying over 1700 workers across Australia and the US, the report discloses a remarkable 9% surge in enthusiasm about work, totaling 78% of respondents. Although the specific reasons behind this boost remain undisclosed, workplace happiness and flexibility could play a crucial role. HR managers acknowledge that offering flexibility, such as remote work options and flexible hours, fosters well-being, prevents burnout, encourages innovation, and enhances organizational culture. Remote work declines from 34% to 22%, while hybrid work arrangements grow to 43% in 2022, presenting opportunities for better work-life balance.

Flexibility also opens doors to promoting diversity within the workforce.

As barriers like commuting dissolve, companies gain access to a more diverse talent pool. Meeting employees’ diverse needs fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion, leading to higher retention rates for a diverse workforce.

Despite the benefits, flexibility brings unique challenges, including accommodating differing schedules and aligning tasks and goals. Furthermore, external stressors lingering from the pandemic continue to impact employees’ mental health and financial well-being.

How to combat imposter syndrome?

  • A culture of appreciation and recognition is crucial. Atlassian’s research highlights the positive impact of expressing gratitude and encouragement, fostering psychological safety. Leaders’ timely feedback, acknowledgment of individual contributions, and celebration of team achievements boost employees’ confidence and self-worth.
  • Open conversations about imposter syndrome can also be encouraged, providing support and strategies to overcome these feelings. Building trust and psychological safety within teams creates a positive work environment where ideas are freely shared.
  • High-performing teams require alignment, cohesion, psychological safety, and innovation potential. Clearly defining roles and linking individual work to team objectives fosters a cohesive and dynamic team. Promoting psychological safety encourages sharing of perspectives and ideas, driving innovation.
  • Focusing on mental well-being, employee growth, and positive work culture is essential as we navigate the post-pandemic challenges, shaping a thriving workforce in Australia.
  • Overcoming imposter syndrome starts with recognising and embracing your unique talents, strengths, and abilities that set you apart. Reflect on past successes and seek input from those who know you well to identify your superpowers.
  • To succeed, put your unique abilities into action by seeking opportunities that showcase your gifts. Set specific goals for leveraging your skills and create a plan of action to achieve them. Combat negative thoughts with empowering daily affirmations focused on your distinct skill set.
  • Conquer imposter syndrome with practical tools. Learn to accept compliments graciously and reinforce positive beliefs about yourself. Cultivate self-love through personalised affirmations that highlight your strengths. Challenge the myth of meritocracy and recognise the role of luck and support networks in success.
  • Incorporate meditation into your daily routine to mentally ground yourself and reinforce your worthiness. Mindfulness, loving-kindness, and CBT-guided meditations can counteract self-doubt and enhance emotional regulation.
  • Create a personalised roadmap to professional success with a career mapping workbook. Conduct an honest self-assessment of your skills, passions, and goals. Break down aspirations into actionable steps with specific timeframes to gain clarity and confidence.
  • Seek professional help if imposter syndrome persists or interferes with daily life. Research different mental health providers, get recommendations, and schedule consultations to find the right fit for your needs.

Unleashing hidden potential and conquering imposter syndrome is crucial for embracing greatness in the Australian workplace. By fostering flexibility, promoting diversity, and cultivating a culture of appreciation and recognition, HR management empowers employees to overcome imposter feelings and reach their full potential.

You are capable of achieving greatness. Remember to embrace your unique gifts, utilise practical strategies, and seek support when needed to conquer imposter syndrome and thrive in all aspects of life.
