OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed pioneer in generative AI, has launched its highly anticipated text-to-video model, Sora, for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. The announcement, made on Monday, marks a significant milestone in OpenAI’s expansion into multimodal artificial intelligence technologies, putting it in direct competition with tools from Meta, Google, and Stability AI.
Sora, introduced earlier this year in a limited research preview, is now accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers at no additional cost under the name "Sora Turbo." The tool allows users to create videos up to 20 seconds long, in 1080p resolution, and in various aspect ratios, including widescreen, vertical, and square. OpenAI describes the move as a step toward making generative video AI more widely available while continuing to develop safeguards against misuse.
"We're working on tailored pricing for different types of users, which we plan to make available early next year," OpenAI noted in a blog post.
OpenAI's foray into text-to-video generation positions it against similar offerings by major tech players like Meta, Alphabet's Google, and Stability AI. These companies have already introduced experimental models capable of generating video content from text inputs, driving innovation in areas like content creation, advertising, and education.
With Sora now rolling out globally to ChatGPT’s user base, OpenAI strengthens its foothold in this competitive space. However, the service will not yet be available in EU countries, Switzerland, or the UK, likely due to compliance challenges with data and AI regulations.
In a proactive move, OpenAI has implemented measures to prevent the misuse of Sora. These include blocking the generation and upload of harmful or abusive content, such as child exploitation materials and sexual deepfakes. Uploads of people will initially be restricted, but OpenAI plans to expand this feature as it refines its mitigation strategies.
“We intend to roll the feature out to more users as we refine our deepfake mitigations,” OpenAI stated, underlining its commitment to ethical AI deployment.
The release of Sora comes as OpenAI continues to solidify its role as a leader in AI innovation. Since introducing ChatGPT in November 2022, the company has driven a wave of generative AI adoption across industries. Sora’s ability to produce high-quality, customizable video content represents another leap forward, catering to both individual creators and businesses seeking cutting-edge tools.
Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to introduce tiered pricing models to accommodate different user needs, potentially expanding the appeal of Sora in professional and enterprise settings.
The launch of Sora turbocharges the possibilities for creators, enabling the rapid generation of video content with minimal effort. From marketing campaigns to educational videos, the tool is poised to revolutionize workflows in creative industries.
As OpenAI refines Sora and expands its availability, it is clear that text-to-video technology will become an increasingly integral part of AI-driven content creation. For now, ChatGPT Plus and Pro users outside of restricted regions can explore the transformative potential of Sora as OpenAI takes another bold step into the future of AI.
