Following the introduction of other tools like Sora, OpenAI is now allowing users to add +1-1800-242-8478 as a WhatsApp contact, providing a seamless, accessible way to engage with AI even on low-data connections.

In a major update from OpenAI, ChatGPT is now available on WhatsApp, making it easier than ever for users to interact with the AI-powered chatbot. This new feature is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” series, which includes a mix of both major updates and smaller feature rollouts. Following the introduction of other tools like Sora, OpenAI is now allowing users to add +1-1800-242-8478 as a WhatsApp contact, providing a seamless, accessible way to engage with AI even on low-data connections.

WhatsApp, with over 2.7 billion active users worldwide, is one of the most popular messaging platforms globally. This makes it an ideal choice for OpenAI to expand its reach, especially as Meta’s own AI tools increase competition. By integrating ChatGPT into WhatsApp, OpenAI can tap into WhatsApp's massive user base and its popularity in regions with inconsistent access to high-speed internet. As a result, the new feature provides users in these areas the opportunity to access AI-powered assistance without requiring the web-heavy infrastructure that the ChatGPT app typically demands.

OpenAI emphasized that ChatGPT on WhatsApp uses its GPT-4o-mini model, the same version that powers the free ChatGPT app. Users can now engage in various forms of interaction with the AI, ranging from creative writing help and idea brainstorming to travel or recipe recommendations. The chatbot can also have general conversations on topics ranging from news and current events to hobbies and interests. This makes it an extremely versatile tool that can cater to both personal and professional needs.

For users in the U.S., OpenAI has taken the experience one step further by introducing the option to make voice calls with ChatGPT. Powered by OpenAI's Realtime API, this feature allows for a more dynamic and conversational interaction with the AI, pushing the boundaries of traditional text-based communication. This addition underscores OpenAI’s commitment to evolving its AI products to be as accessible and engaging as possible for users.

However, OpenAI has made it clear that this feature is still experimental. Usage may be subject to rate limits, and availability will vary depending on demand. The company has also advised users who require more advanced tools, higher limits, or personalized experiences to continue using ChatGPT through their existing accounts on other platforms, ensuring that the new WhatsApp feature remains a free, accessible option for general users.

This move is a strategic one for OpenAI, as it aligns with the company’s broader mission to make AI more universally accessible. With the integration of ChatGPT into one of the most widely used communication platforms, OpenAI is setting the stage for greater AI adoption, particularly in areas where internet access is limited or less stable. As the demand for AI-powered tools continues to grow, this WhatsApp integration marks an important step toward bringing AI into the daily lives of people around the world.

To start using ChatGPT on WhatsApp, simply add the number +1-1800-242-8478 as a contact, and begin messaging the AI chatbot for free.
