At CES 2025, Nvidia unveiled its next-generation RTX 50-series graphics cards, marking a major leap in performance and features. After months of anticipation, the new RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070 are officially here, bringing groundbreaking improvements to graphics technology.
The RTX 5090, priced at $1,999, is the flagship of this new series. With 32GB of the latest GDDR7 memory and 21,760 CUDA cores (the cores that power the graphics), this GPU promises performance that is twice as fast as its predecessor, the RTX 4090. Nvidia claims that the RTX 5090 can run games and apps at much higher frame rates, providing smoother, more detailed visuals, especially with features like DLSS 4 (Deep Learning Super Sampling), a technology that boosts frame rates and improves image quality using artificial intelligence.
Nvidia demonstrated the RTX 5090 running the popular game Cyberpunk 2077 at 238 frames per second, compared to 106 fps on the RTX 4090. This means the new GPU can handle graphics-heavy games much more efficiently, making it ideal for high-end gaming and professional workloads, such as 3D rendering and video editing.
The RTX 5090 also features a more compact design, making it easier to fit into smaller PC cases. Despite its massive performance, the RTX 5090 is only a two-slot card, unlike its bulkier predecessor. However, it comes with a higher power requirement: a 1000-watt power supply is recommended, as it needs 575 watts of power for peak performance.
Next in line is the RTX 5080, priced at $999, which Nvidia claims is twice as fast as the RTX 4080. This GPU features 16GB of GDDR7 memory and 10,752 CUDA cores, offering a major performance boost for gamers who want incredible visuals and smooth gameplay. With a lower power requirement (360 watts and an 850-watt power supply), the RTX 5080 is a powerful option for those who don’t need the absolute top-of-the-line performance but still want a premium experience.
Along with desktop GPUs, Nvidia is also bringing the RTX 50-series to laptops. The RTX 5090 laptop GPU will feature 24GB of memory, with other models (RTX 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5070) offering varying amounts of memory, from 16GB to 8GB. These laptop GPUs will be available from March 2025 and bring the power of the RTX 50-series to portable devices, allowing gamers and creators to enjoy high-performance graphics on the go.
One of the most exciting features of the RTX 50-series is DLSS 4. This next-gen version of Nvidia’s AI-powered technology can generate up to three additional frames per traditional frame, increasing frame rates and image quality. It also uses transformer AI to reduce visual issues like ghosting and improve the level of detail, especially in fast-moving scenes. DLSS 4 will work not just on the new RTX 50-series cards but also on older models, ensuring that a wider range of Nvidia users benefit from the improvements.
Availability
The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will be available starting January 30, 2025, with the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 following in February. Meanwhile, the laptop versions will arrive in March 2025.
With these new GPUs, Nvidia is setting the bar higher for graphics performance, offering more powerful options for gamers, creators, and professionals alike. Whether you’re after the ultimate gaming experience or need powerful tools for content creation, the RTX 50-series promises to deliver on all fronts.
