Balding’s appointment follows the unexpected resignation of Emma Harrington, who left the CEO role after less than six months to pursue new opportunities.

Standards Australia has announced the appointment of Rod Balding as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). With a wealth of experience spanning the finance, commercial, and risk management sectors, Balding brings a unique skill set to the role. His extensive background also includes significant contributions to the not-for-profit sector, where he has worked with prominent organisations such as the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Women’s Basketball World Cup, the Australian Sports Foundation, and Basketball Australia.

Balding's appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Standards Australia, an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit standards organisation. As representatives of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Standards Australia plays a pivotal role in developing and adopting internationally-aligned standards across the country.

Tracey Gramlick, Chair of Standards Australia, expressed enthusiasm about Balding’s appointment, highlighting his character and commitment to social purpose. “Through our comprehensive selection process, we sought a leader who could not only meet our organisational goals but also harmonise with the exemplary efforts of our team. Rod possesses a genuine character and social purpose that aligns with our values, and I am excited to welcome him to the team,” Gramlick said.

Balding’s appointment follows the unexpected resignation of Emma Harrington, who left the CEO role after less than six months to pursue new opportunities. Harrington's resignation created the need for a new leader who could guide Standards Australia through its critical work of shaping national standards that impact a wide range of sectors including infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology.

Rod Balding expressed his eagerness to lead Standards Australia and continue its legacy of fostering the development of high-quality, internationally recognized standards. “I am incredibly excited and honoured to be joining the team at Standards Australia. I look forward to working with the Board and all our stakeholders to build upon the long and proud history of the organisation and ensure that our standards continue to meet the evolving needs of our diverse community and industries,” Balding said.

Standards Australia’s role in the development and implementation of standards is vital for the Australian economy and its global competitiveness. The organisation's efforts ensure that Australian industries align with international standards, maintaining quality, safety, and innovation in sectors ranging from energy to healthcare. With Balding’s leadership, Standards Australia aims to further strengthen its position as a trusted authority on standardization.

As Balding takes the helm, the organisation is poised to continue its vital work, helping shape a prosperous future for Australia by ensuring that industries and communities adhere to world-class standards. His leadership promises to guide Standards Australia through the challenges of a rapidly evolving global landscape, where standards play an increasingly important role in global trade and technological advancement.

Balding’s appointment signals a fresh approach to an organisation with a long history of success, and his leadership is set to contribute to the continued growth and impact of Standards Australia on both the national and international stages.
