OpenAI strengthens Australia presence with new Sydney hub and major enterprise deals

Virgin Australia, Wesfarmers, Commbank and other leading organisations join OpenAI’s growing list of local partners as the company expands its regional footprint.
OpenAI has taken a significant step into the Australian market, opening a new office in Sydney and unveiling a series of partnerships with some of the country’s most recognised businesses. The move reflects the pace at which generative AI is being adopted across industries, from retail and aviation to banking, education and mining.
At the launch, Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s chief strategy officer, said Australia is well placed to lead meaningful innovation in AI, crediting the country’s early adoption of new technologies and its strong developer community. While the Sydney team will initially focus on support and partnerships, Kwon noted that the local operation is expected to grow into more technical and specialised roles as demand evolves.
Several organisations have already outlined how they plan to use OpenAI’s technology. Wesfarmers will integrate ChatGPT Enterprise into the training and workflow systems used across its large workforce, spanning brands such as Bunnings, Kmart and Officeworks. Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand, meanwhile, are looking to embed AI into customer-facing digital platforms and operational processes to better understand traveller behaviour and streamline service.
In the financial sector, Commbank has strengthened its multi-year arrangement with OpenAI to scale automation and enhance its fraud and scam detection capabilities. Mining major Fortescue is also exploring ways to apply generative AI across its rail, port and mine operations.
Education and media are quickly joining the wave. La Trobe University will roll out ChatGPT Edu to students and staff over the next two years, while REA Group has launched Real Assist, an AI-driven companion designed to help property owners better understand valuations and simplify real estate decisions. News Corp has expanded its own partnership, introducing a new travel tool, Ask Skye.
OpenAI’s deeper push into Australia comes at a time when global competition in the AI sector is intensifying, making the country an increasingly strategic market for innovation and adoption.
