The aim is to help jobseekers build practical skills while supporting employers struggling to fill vacancies.

The Australian Government has expanded its local jobs programme with an additional AU$10mn in funding, extending the initiative until 30 June 2027, according to human resources online.

A total of 49 organisations across the country will deliver community-led projects designed to connect jobseekers with employers, training opportunities and long-term employment pathways.

The projects will operate under the government’s ‘Local Jobs, Local People’ initiative, which focuses on addressing workforce shortages at a regional level while helping more Australians move into secure work.

Regional needs

According to the government, the projects will align with local jobs plans in each employment region. The aim is to help jobseekers build practical skills while supporting employers struggling to fill vacancies.

The programme will target labour shortages in key growth sectors including manufacturing, care and support, digital and emerging technologies, and the energy transition.

The grants will also focus on groups that often face barriers to employment. This includes mature-aged Australians over 45, young people aged up to 24, First Nations people, and individuals needing additional support to secure work or increase their working hours.

Skills support

Support activities under the projects will include job-ready training, industry-specific skills development, employer-led placements and wrap-around support services designed to improve employment outcomes.

Amanda Rishworth, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, said the grants would help strengthen both workforce participation and employer access to skilled workers.

"We’re backing Australians with the skills, experience and support they need to secure jobs, while helping employers unlock the skilled workforce they need", she added.

She concluded that the grants would support jobseekers, employers and local businesses through practical, community-led solutions tailored to local workforce needs.
