Mastodon CEO steps down as platform shifts to non-profit leadership model

Eugen Rochko exits the CEO role after a decade of leading Mastodon, as the decentralised social network restructures under a new non-profit board to secure long-term stability.
Mastodon, the decentralised social network often cited as a key alternative to X, is undergoing its biggest leadership transition since its inception. Founder Eugen Rochko has stepped down as CEO as part of the platform’s move toward a formal non-profit structure—an overhaul aimed at ensuring Mastodon’s sustainability beyond the vision of a single leader.
The new governance model places Mastodon under a board of directors that includes Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, Karien Bezuidenhout, Esra’a Al Shafei, Community Director Hannah Aubry (who will also be transitioning out), and Felix Hlatky, who steps in as Executive Director. The shift marks the first time Mastodon will be guided by a diversified leadership team rather than running almost entirely on Rochko’s shoulders.
Rochko, who will remain an advisor, acknowledged that burnout played a role in his decision. After ten years of building and managing Mastodon—sometimes at personal financial cost—he said the platform had grown too large for one person to steer. He has received a one-time €1 million payment in recognition of years spent working below market salary.
The new leadership team brings together expertise in technology, communications, and strategy, with roles designed to strengthen Mastodon’s financial footing and operational resilience. Hlatky, who previously assisted Mastodon in establishing its German non-profit status, will now lead efforts to expand funding opportunities, particularly in Europe. Mastodon is also setting up a Belgian non-profit entity to serve as its long-term home.
While the platform continues to champion decentralised, “billionaire-proof” social networking, its focus for now is stability rather than ambitious cross-protocol interoperability. Projects like hosting services, moderation tools, trust and safety, and infrastructure improvements are expected to anchor Mastodon’s next phase.
The transition comes at a time when user numbers have dipped from the post-Twitter spike, but the organisation believes its renewed structure positions it to grow in a more sustainable, community-driven way.
