Recreational Aviation Australia reappoints Michael Linke as CEO

Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) has reappointed Michael Linke as Chief Executive Officer, marking his return to the organisation after nearly five years. The appointment follows Maxine Milera's decision to step down from the role, according to Australian Flying.

RAAus Chair Jim Tatlock said Milera's departure was voluntary and had the full support of the Board. She will remain with the organisation in a different role, focusing on responsibilities including budget management and other operational areas where the Board believes her expertise will continue to add value.

"Her passion for recreational aviation and commitment to the organisation have been instrumental in supporting both RAAus and its members," the Board said in a statement, thanking Milera for her leadership and her two decades of service to the organisation.

Returning leader to focus on growth

Linke previously served as RAAus CEO for six years before leaving the organisation in 2020. During his earlier tenure, he played a key role in professionalising the organisation and guiding it towards Part 149 Approved Self-administering Aviation Organisation (ASAO) status.

According to Tatlock, Linke's responsibilities will differ from his previous term following an internal restructuring. The CEO role no longer includes the position of authorised aviation person under Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegation, allowing him to focus exclusively on the organisation's commercial and strategic priorities.

His priorities will include improving member services, expanding membership and advancing key initiatives such as MOSAIC.

Board opts for direct appointment

The Board confirmed it did not conduct an external recruitment process, with Linke the only candidate considered for the position.

Tatlock said the Board began exploring leadership options after Milera expressed her intention to transition into another role and subsequently learned that Linke was available.

"He was asked if he would consider returning and enthusiastically advised he would love to return," Tatlock said. "We consider ourselves privileged to have him back. He did a fantastic job in his last term as CEO."

Focus on long-term sustainability

The Board said its immediate priorities include addressing challenges across the recreational aviation sector, strengthening membership and improving the organisation's long-term financial sustainability.

It added that Linke's previous leadership experience and deep understanding of the organisation made him well placed to lead the next phase of growth without the need for a lengthy transition period.
