Mercury has appointed Summerset Group chief executive Scott Scoullar as an independent director, with the new board member set to join on 1 September 2026.

The appointment adds finance, accounting and commercial expertise to Mercury’s board, with Scoullar bringing experience across the public and private sectors.

Finance and governance experience

Scoullar is CEO of retirement village and aged care operator Summerset Group and serves on the boards of the Retirement Villages Association and the New Zealand Aged Care Association.

He previously held CFO roles at Summerset Group, Housing New Zealand Corporation and Inland Revenue.

His governance experience includes serving on the audit committee of The Treasury New Zealand, the risk and assurance committee of New Zealand Customs Service and as a director of Wellington City Mission.

Mercury chair Scott St John welcomed the appointment.

"Scott's broad experience, governance depth, and hands-on understanding of running a major publicly-listed, capital-intensive organisation will be hugely valuable."

Appointment subject to shareholder vote

Scoullar holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration from Victoria University of Wellington. He is also a fellow of CPA Australia and a member of ICANZ and INFINZ.

The Mercury board unanimously backed his appointment and determined that he meets the independence requirements under the NZX Listing Rules.

Under those rules, Scoullar will retire at Mercury’s Annual Shareholder Meeting on 18 September 2026 and stand for election by shareholders.

If elected, he will continue on the board as an independent director, bringing his experience in finance, governance and the management of a major listed organisation to the energy company.
