Master Builders Australia appoints Melissa Byrne as CEO, succeeding Denita Wawn

Byrne will succeed Denita Wawn, who will conclude her tenure at the end of January 2027 after more than a decade as CEO.
Master Builders Australia has appointed Melissa Byrne as its next Chief Executive Officer, with the incoming leader set to take charge of the building and construction industry association on February 1, 2027.
The appointment was announced on November 2, following a decision by the organisation's National Board. Byrne currently serves as Master Builders Australia's National Director, Policy and Legal, where she has played a key role in shaping the association's advocacy agenda and advancing national policy outcomes for the industry.
She brings almost two decades of experience representing the building and construction sector, with expertise in industry policy, advocacy and legal matters.
Byrne will succeed Denita Wawn, who will conclude her tenure at the end of January 2027 after more than a decade as CEO.
Commenting on the appointment, National President Robert Shaw said Byrne's industry knowledge and experience in policy leadership positioned her to lead the organisation into its next phase.
"The Board and I are delighted to appoint Melissa as CEO. I've had the privilege of working closely with her and have seen first-hand her commitment to our members, her deep understanding of the industry and her tireless advocacy on behalf of builders and tradies across Australia," Shaw said.
"Melissa combines deep industry expertise with a clear vision for the future. She has been instrumental in advancing Master Builders' national advocacy efforts and is exceptionally well placed to lead the organisation into its next phase of growth and influence."
Outlining her priorities, Byrne said the association would continue to advocate for policy changes and reforms that support the industry's growth and productivity.
"Building and construction is one of Australia's most important industries, driving economic growth, creating jobs and delivering the homes, infrastructure and communities that Australians rely on every day," she said.
"Master Builders has a proud history of standing up for our members, and that mission will remain front and centre. We will continue to advocate strongly for the policies and reforms needed to help our industry thrive."
She also called on governments to address barriers to investment and improve productivity to enable the sector to meet Australia's housing and infrastructure requirements.
"Our industry is ready to deliver the homes, infrastructure and buildings Australia needs. To unlock that potential, governments must back the businesses that build our nation by removing barriers, improving productivity and creating the conditions for investment and growth," Byrne said.
Shaw also acknowledged Wawn's contribution to the organisation and the wider construction sector, crediting her with more than a decade of leadership and advocacy.
"On behalf of the National Board, I also want to thank Denita for her extraordinary leadership and friendship over many years. She has been a passionate advocate for our members and has left an enduring mark on both our organisation and the broader building and construction industry," he said.
Reflecting on her tenure, Wawn described leading the association and representing the industry as a privilege.
"It has been a tremendous privilege to lead Master Builders Australia and represent an industry that helps shape the nation every day through the homes, buildings and infrastructure it delivers," she said.
"I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and look forward to seeing the organisation continue to grow and succeed under Melissa's leadership."
