Gopal joins Australian Unity after senior leadership roles spanning wealth management, digital platforms and investments.

Australian Unity has appointed Balaji Gopal as Chief Executive Officer, Wealth & Capital Markets and Group Executive.

Gopal will lead Australian Unity’s wealth and capital markets operations, drawing on more than 20 years of experience across wealth management, investments, banking, digital platforms, product development and technology-led transformation.

Vanguard Australia executive moves to Australian Unity

Gopal joins Australian Unity after more than nine years at Vanguard Australia, where he held senior roles across product strategy, retail investing, distribution, customer experience, digital platforms and strategic growth.

Most recently, he was Head of Strategic Growth, Customer Experience, Digital & Partnerships. In the role, he led Vanguard’s customer and digital agenda across retail and adviser channels and developed new partnership-led growth opportunities.

He previously served as Head of Distribution & Financial Adviser Services, overseeing adviser, institutional and key-account distribution across managed funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), superannuation and platform solutions.

Gopal also led Vanguard Personal Investor as Head of Personal Investor (Retail), helping scale the direct-to-consumer investment platform. During his tenure, the platform grew to about $17 billion in funds under management and around 300,000 clients.

Two decades across wealth management and banking

Before Vanguard, Gopal spent eight years at ANZ, including as Senior Manager, Strategic Enablement and Delivery in the ANZ Wealth Chief Investment Office.

His work at ANZ covered operating-model transformation, portfolio rationalisation and major wealth transactions and divestments.

He also held the role of Product Development Manager, Investment Products and Platforms at ANZ Private Bank, working on investment, platform and trustee solutions for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients.

Earlier in his career, Gopal held consulting, technology and project leadership roles with SMS Management and Technology, NAB and Honeywell. He also worked across emergency services and healthcare operations.

Australian Unity targets wealth and digital growth

Gopal’s appointment brings together expertise in wealth management, investment products, customer experience and digital transformation at a time when Australia’s financial services sector is rapidly evolving.

His experience building digital investment platforms and developing wealth products could support Australian Unity’s focus on expanding its wealth and capital markets capabilities.

Gopal holds a Master’s in Applied Finance from Macquarie University and a postgraduate qualification in Applied Science (Computing) from RMIT University.
