Australia and UK join forces against fast-moving AI threats

The agreement will be formally signed in Canberra on Monday by the UK’s AI Minister Kanishka Narayan and Australia’s Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and Digital Economy Andrew Charlton.
Australia and UK are deepening cooperation on artificial intelligence security as both nations race to tackle emerging risks linked to powerful AI systems, as reported by the UK government.
A new memorandum of understanding between the Australian AI Safety Institute and UK AI Security Institute will strengthen collaboration on frontier AI research, cyber threats, and global safety standards.
The agreement will be formally signed in Canberra on Monday by the UK’s AI Minister Kanishka Narayan and Australia’s Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Andrew Charlton.
Cyber concerns
Both countries will share intelligence on rapidly evolving AI capabilities, especially around the growing risk of AI-driven cyber-attacks.
The partnership will also focus on developing international best practices for testing and evaluating advanced AI systems. Officials say the move is aimed at ensuring AI systems behave safely and as intended.
Staff exchanges between the two institutes are also expected to strengthen day-to-day cooperation.
The agreement comes at a time when governments worldwide are increasingly concerned about the speed at which AI systems are advancing.
Research warning
Fresh research from the UK’s AI Security Institute has highlighted how advanced AI models are becoming significantly more capable of carrying out sophisticated cyber operations.
The findings have intensified concerns over how AI could be exploited by malicious actors, while also creating opportunities for stronger cyber defences.
Officials say the latest partnership reflects a broader push among allied nations to prevent security risks from outpacing regulation and oversight.
Minister’s statement
Kanishka Narayan, UK AI Minister said, “Australia and the UK have always worked closely to keep our people safe – and that partnership matters more than ever in the age of AI.”
“This technology is moving fast, and so are the risks that come with it, particularly in areas like cyber security. No country can tackle that alone.
By working hand in hand with trusted partners such as Australia, we can stay ahead of the risks, strengthen our defences and make sure AI is used to improve lives for Brits and Aussies alike,” he added.
Global push
The new pact adds to the UK AI Security Institute’s growing network of international collaborations focused on AI measurement, evaluation, and safety research.
Both governments believe closer international cooperation will be critical as AI continues to reshape economies, security systems, and critical infrastructure worldwide.
