Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) has appointed Mike Saunders as Interim Chief Executive Officer, according to an announcement on the Racing WA official website.
Saunders will take up the role next week and remain Interim CEO through to 31 July 2027. His appointment follows the decision by current CEO Ian Edwards to step down, with Edwards set to leave RWWA on 13 November 2026.
Leadership transition
RWWA Board Chair Karen Farley SC said the Board unanimously endorsed Saunders’ appointment, citing his experience across the organisation and the racing and wagering sectors.
“The Board has confidence in Mike’s leadership and his ability to guide RWWA through the opportunities and challenges ahead,” Farley said.
Saunders has more than 25 years’ experience across racing and wagering and has been part of RWWA’s Executive Team in his current role as Chief Wagering Officer.
“Mike has been a key member of RWWA's Executive Team and brings more than 25 years' experience across both racing and wagering. His experience, leadership and deep understanding of our organisation make him the right person to lead RWWA through its next chapter,” Farley added.
Farley said the appointment would provide continuity while allowing for a structured handover ahead of Edwards’ departure.
Edwards to leave after six years
Edwards is stepping down after six years as RWWA CEO. Farley acknowledged his contribution to the organisation and the Western Australian racing industry.
“Ian leaves behind a strong legacy, and the Board is grateful for his leadership and dedication over the past six years,” Farley said.
“The Board thanks Ian for his leadership and his ongoing support as we work through this transition.”
Saunders to lead next phase
“Western Australian racing plays a vital role across the State, generating significant economic activity, supporting thousands of jobs and connecting communities,” Saunders said.
“I look forward to leading RWWA as we continue working with industry participants, race clubs, government and stakeholders to support a long-term sustainable future for racing in Western Australia.”
Saunders would focus on working with racing industry participants, race clubs, government and other stakeholders during his tenure.
