Australia-Pacific Business Councils name new CEO

The Australia Pacific Islands Business Council, Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council and Australia Fiji Business Council have appointed Leata Alaimoana-Roberts as Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 June 2026.

A new chapter is beginning for Australia's business engagement across the Pacific.

She takes over from Frank Yourn, who has led the councils for more than two decades and helped shape their growth across the region, according to a recent LinkedIn post by Australia Pacific Islands Business Council

Strategic timing

The appointment comes as commercial ties between Australia and Pacific nations continue to deepen.

Opportunities are expanding across infrastructure, trade, investment, agriculture and regional connectivity. The councils are positioning themselves to play an even bigger role in supporting businesses seeking to tap into that growth.

Extensive experience

Alaimoana-Roberts brings significant expertise in trade, investment and economic development.

She has built a career focused on strengthening partnerships between governments, businesses and regional stakeholders. Her experience spans investment promotion, regional engagement and delivering practical commercial outcomes across Pacific markets.

In her new role, she will lead the shared secretariat supporting all three councils.

Her responsibilities will include member engagement, strategic partnerships and the delivery of major business forums, trade missions and industry-focused programmes.

Looking ahead

Alaimoana-Roberts said she is eager to work closely with businesses throughout the region.

“I’m really excited by the opportunity, by what’s happening in the Pacific right now and also, importantly, working closely together with you all. We really want to work closely with the private sector, as well as see how best we can continue the legacy and the amazing foundation that’s been built over the years.”

Legacy continues

The councils also recognised Yourn's long-standing contribution to strengthening commercial and institutional links between Australia and Pacific Island nations.

While stepping down as CEO, he will remain involved for the next six months to support a smooth transition and handover process.

Council representatives said the appointment signals both continuity and renewal as demand grows for stronger Australia-Pacific business connections.

With fresh leadership and rising regional opportunities, the councils are preparing for their next phase of growth and influence across the Pacific.
