Report reveals how much time the average employee saves by using AI

A recent report from The Adecco Group highlights the significant time-saving benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, revealing that employees are gaining back an average of one hour each day. This insight is based on a comprehensive survey of 35,000 workers across 27 global markets, showcasing early signs of AI's impact on workplace efficiency.

The report indicates that 21% of respondents save between 45 and 60 minutes daily due to AI usage, while 20% manage to save one to two hours. The results underscore the varying benefits across different sectors, with employees in the energy, utilities, and clean technology industries reporting the highest average savings of 75 minutes per day. Other sectors demonstrating notable time savings include:

  • Technology sector: 66 minutes saved daily
  • Manufacturing sector: 62 minutes saved daily
  • Financial services sector: 57 minutes saved daily
  • Aerospace and defense sector: 52 minutes saved daily

Denis Machuel, CEO of The Adecco Group, commented on these findings, stating, "The excitement surrounding AI's potential is now being supported by tangible evidence of efficiency improvements in the workplace. This is just the beginning, but it’s encouraging to see how AI can enhance productivity."

With the extra time gained from AI integration, employees are finding ways to increase their productivity levels. The report reveals that 73% of workers who utilize AI tools report feeling more productive at their jobs. The time saved is being redirected towards various valuable activities, such as:

  • Quality assurance: 29% of employees focus on checking the accuracy and quality of their work.
  • Creative endeavours: 28% use their saved time to engage in more creative tasks, contributing to innovation and problem-solving.

"The effective use of time saved through AI indicates that workers are not just finishing tasks faster but are also improving the overall quality and creativity of their output," Machuel noted. "This trend appears to be prevalent across various industries, suggesting a broader positive impact of AI."

Despite the promising findings, there remains a degree of skepticism regarding AI's return on investment. As organizations increasingly implement AI technologies, some executives are growing impatient with the slow realization of benefits. Previous research from Gartner even predicted that around 30% of generative AI projects may be abandoned by the end of 2025 due to the challenges faced during development and deployment.

However, the findings from The Adecco Group align with recent trends indicating that many organizations adopting generative AI are witnessing payoffs within the first year. This positive outlook may help alleviate some concerns regarding AI's practical advantages in enhancing workplace efficiency.

As AI technologies continue to evolve and integrate into various sectors, the implications for workplace dynamics are substantial. The capacity to automate repetitive tasks and streamline workflows is just one dimension of AI's potential impact. As reported, employees are not only completing their tasks more quickly but are also finding opportunities to engage in higher-level thinking and creativity—skills that are becoming increasingly critical in today’s job market.

While the advantages of AI are becoming clearer, challenges still exist. Companies must address issues related to workforce upskilling, employee apprehensions regarding job displacement, and the ethical implications of AI deployment. The integration of AI must be managed thoughtfully to ensure it complements rather than replaces human skills.
