Confidence crisis? Only 1 in 4 positive about career prospects

In a recent survey conducted by Gartner, a leading research and advisory firm, concerning employee career preferences, a striking revelation has emerged: only 25% of employees feel confident about their career prospects within their current organisation. The findings shed light on the urgent need for companies to reassess their talent management strategies and create robust pathways for professional growth.

The survey, which involved a diverse pool of employees from various industries, uncovered a significant disparity between employees' aspirations and their perception of advancement opportunities. A Gartner survey of over 3,300 employees conducted in March 2022 revealed that fewer than 1 in 3 employees know how to progress their career over the next five years. Many employees do not feel they can rely on their managers for help, with only 50% reporting that their manager tailors feedback based on the role they want to move into. As a result, employees are increasingly considering leaving their organisations, as the Gartner survey found that three-quarters of the 480 employees actively looking for a new job were interested in external roles.

Despite widespread ambition and a desire for growth, many employees expressed dissatisfaction with the career development opportunities available within their organisations. This lack of confidence can lead to reduced engagement, decreased productivity, and even high turnover rates, as employees seek opportunities elsewhere.
