Virgin Australia’s chief commercial officer Dave Emerson steps up as CEO

Virgin Australia has appointed  Dave Emerson as its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Jayne Hrdlicka, who signaled her intention to step down in February 2024. Emerson, who currently serves as the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer, will officially assume the role on March 14.

Emerson brings over 25 years of experience in the aviation and tourism industries, having worked with global airlines and earned a strong reputation for delivering business transformation and financial success. Since joining Virgin Australia in June 2021, he has played a key role in positioning the airline as a leading choice for value-driven travelers while ensuring a strong focus on customer experience and employee engagement.

Virgin Australia Chairman Ryan Cotton expressed confidence in Emerson’s leadership, noting that a global search confirmed he was the ideal candidate to steer the company forward. “After an extensive search, it was clear that Dave is the right leader to continue the implementation of Virgin Australia’s strategy,” Cotton said. “He has been instrumental in developing our transformation and growth plans, ensuring continuity in our business performance and competitive position in the Australian aviation market.”

Cotton further praised Emerson’s understanding of the airline’s unique culture and his ability to balance commercial strategy with operational excellence. “Dave appreciates what makes Virgin Australia special—our people. He is well-respected across the organisation and will lead us in delivering strong performance and growth,” he added.

The appointment comes as Virgin Australia continues its post-pandemic recovery, expanding its domestic and international operations. Under Jayne Hrdlicka’s leadership, the airline successfully navigated challenges, emerging stronger from administration and announcing a return to long-haul international flights. Cotton credited Hrdlicka for her relentless efforts in revitalizing the airline, stating, “Jayne led Virgin Australia through some of the toughest times in the industry, from post-COVID recovery to securing a new strategic investor. She leaves behind a strong foundation for future growth.”

Emerson expressed his enthusiasm for leading Virgin Australia into its next phase. “I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead this incredible airline and our 8,000-strong team,” he said. “Travel is essential to how we live, and Virgin Australia plays a crucial role in making it possible for millions of people. Our people are the heart of this organisation, and they will remain central to our brand as we continue to innovate and expand.”

Looking ahead, Emerson emphasized Virgin Australia’s commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction. “We are Australia’s most loved airline, delivering industry-leading performance and record financial results. As we reintroduce long-haul international routes and enhance our domestic offerings, we aim to provide even greater choice and value for our customers while creating new opportunities for our team,” he said.

Outgoing CEO Jayne Hrdlicka expressed confidence in Emerson’s ability to lead the airline forward. “It has been a privilege to lead Virgin Australia, and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved as a team. With Dave at the helm, the airline is in excellent hands. He has been a key contributor to our transformation journey and will ensure continued success,” she said.

As Virgin Australia enters its next chapter under Emerson’s leadership, the airline remains focused on growth, innovation, and delivering outstanding travel experiences for its customers.
