After corporate hiring freeze, Amazon plans to lay off thousands

After recently announcing a corporate hiring freeze, industry behemoth Amazon has announced their plan to lay off 10,000 employees as part of a massive cost-cutting and restructuring measure. 

As per the New York Times, this layoff would represent less than 1% of the workforce of an organisation that employs over 1.6 million globally.

The job cuts will target the devices group, including the one responsible for the Alexa voice assistant. The retail division as well as the human resources division would be under the scanner too, various media sources have reported. 

Amazon has also cautioned the potential laid off employees to look for other opportunities within the company or find jobs in other organisations. 

The retailer giant has spent much of the year adjusting and tweaking their strategies to manage the sharp downturn in the e-commerce growth. Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy and his team have vowed to streamline the operations amid the uncertainty over economic recession. 

The latest news comes weeks after Amazon's Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti announced the corporate hiring freeze in her blog. She had also informed the Amazon staff that the CEO Jassy and his team have decided to “pause on new incremental hires in our corporate workforce”.
