Meta’s Katie Wilson joins FinTech Australia as Head of Policy

FinTech Australia announced the appointment of Katie Wilson as its new Head of Policy, marking a significant development for the fintech sector. Wilson, who previously served as Global Policy Manager at Meta, will leverage her extensive background in law and policy to advance the organization’s strategic objectives. With over a decade of experience, her resume includes notable roles at ANZ Bank, the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet, and law firm Herbert Smith Freehills.

In her new role, Wilson will be instrumental in fostering industry relations with the government, leading policy submissions, and collaborating with FinTech Australia members. Her responsibilities will include shaping the organization’s stance on regulatory matters and ensuring that the fintech industry’s voice is heard in policy discussions.

Rehan D'Almedia, CEO of FinTech Australia, expressed his enthusiasm about Wilson’s appointment. “Policy is integral to the work we do at FinTech Australia for our members,” D'Almedia stated. “Katie’s appointment underscores our commitment to playing a pivotal role within the fintech community. I am eager to collaborate with her on reinforcing our positions in key areas such as the Consumer Data Right, payments, and cryptocurrency regulation.”

Wilson's career trajectory and expertise make her a fitting choice for this role. At Meta, she played a crucial role in global policy management, developing and advocating for policies that aligned with the company's strategic goals. Her background in policy and financial services, coupled with her previous experiences at ANZ Bank and the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet, equips her with a nuanced understanding of both regulatory frameworks and the fintech landscape.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the new position, Wilson commented, “I am thrilled to join the FinTech Australia team and drive the peak body’s policy goals. My focus will be on working with the government and key decision-makers to enhance competition, foster innovation, and improve financial literacy across Australia. I am eager to engage with our remarkable members and contribute to our collective success.”

Wilson further highlighted her familiarity with FinTech Australia’s work. “Since its inception in 2016, I have closely followed FinTech Australia’s efforts. The organization has adeptly managed the diverse policy needs of its members and effectively communicated industry concerns to regulators,” she noted. “My goal is to build on this momentum, addressing fundamental policy issues and translating them into tangible benefits for everyday Australians.”

Wilson’s appointment comes as FinTech Australia prepares for its annual flagship conference, Intersekt, scheduled for 18 and 19 September at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne. The conference is expected to attract over 1,000 delegates from various sectors, including fintech, government, and corporate Australia. The event will provide a platform for discussions on the latest trends and challenges in the fintech industry, underscoring the importance of Wilson’s role in shaping and guiding policy directions.

As FinTech Australia continues to navigate the evolving landscape of financial technology, Wilson’s expertise will be crucial in driving forward the organization’s policy agenda and ensuring that the fintech industry remains at the forefront of innovation and regulation. Her appointment signals a renewed commitment to addressing the sector's regulatory needs and advocating for policies that support its growth and development.
